PORBIOTA as Research Infrastructures (RI) and Project PORBIOTA for the infrastructure implementation

The National Roadmap of Research Infrastructures (RI) was created in alignment with the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) definition. Accordingly, RI is hereby defined as resources and services for scientific communities to conduct top-level research and foster innovation in specific fields of knowledge. In this context, like other European countries that have developed national roadmaps considering the priorities defined in the ESFRI roadmaps, Portugal created the first Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures of strategic relevance for 2014-2020 (RNIE).

Under the call opened by the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) for the establishment of the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures of Strategic Interest (RNIE), the Evaluation Panel classified PORBIOTA as a High Priority Research Infrastructure. With integration of two additional prospective infrastructures ICOS-PT and LTER-PT, and also AZORESBIOPORTAL, which was perceived to be a specific regional component for the national system, PORBIOTA gained the status of a data producer, bringing a whole set of new possibilities within the realm of data sharing and inter-institutional cooperation, and, thus, bridging the gap between other National Infrastructures of the Roadmap. PORBIOTA comes about as the result of the complementarity of the various prospective infrastructure, fostering significant synergies amongst them.

To achieve general aims and specific goals, the project was organized in ten work-packages (WPs) structured according to three major phases:

  1. Data source and infrastructure management (WP2-WP4);
  2. Operation and data science (WP5-WP8); and
  3. Policy and communication management (WP9-WP10)
